“Archaeological insights into Riquewihr in the Middle Ages

The town of Riquewihr, Alsace’s tourist flagship, is steeped in its medieval past, linked to the fortification of the town at the end of the 13th century: the urban topography is organized around a main street, and the remains of the Oberthor (or Dolder) are still visible. All these monuments are reminders of the presence of the Counts of Horbourg, then the Dukes of Wurtemberg. Recent archaeological research has opened up new horizons for the town’s medieval past. Various forms and traces of occupation predating the fortified town are distributed between the lower part of the present-day town and the massif, where castles have been present since the 12th century (?).
